Product Owner – Job Description

Overview

The Product Owner is responsible for maximising the value of the product by defining the vision, managing the product backlog, and ensuring the development team delivers high‑quality features that meet business and customer needs. This role acts as the bridge between stakeholders and the delivery team, translating strategic objectives into actionable work.

Key Responsibilities

Product Vision & Strategy

• Develop and communicate a clear product vision aligned with business goals.

• Define short‑ and long‑term product roadmaps based on market insights, customer feedback, and organisational priorities.

• Identify opportunities for product improvement, innovation, and competitive advantage.

Backlog Ownership

• Create, prioritise, and maintain a transparent and well‑structured product backlog.

• Write clear user stories and acceptance criteria that guide the development team.

• Ensure backlog items are refined, estimated, and ready for sprint planning.

Stakeholder Management

• Act as the primary point of contact for business stakeholders, customers, and internal teams.

• Gather requirements, validate assumptions, and manage expectations throughout the product lifecycle.

• Facilitate alignment between technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Delivery & Execution

• Work closely with the Scrum Master and development team to ensure smooth sprint execution.

• Participate in sprint ceremonies (planning, reviews, retrospectives, daily stand‑ups).

• Accept or reject completed work based on defined acceptance criteria.

• Monitor product performance and ensure timely delivery of high‑value features.

Customer & Market Insight

• Analyse customer behaviour, feedback, and usage data to inform product decisions.

• Conduct competitor and market research to identify trends and risks.

• Champion the voice of the customer across the organisation.

Skills & Experience

Essential

• Proven experience as a Product Owner or similar role in an Agile environment.

• Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies.

• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.

• Ability to translate business needs into technical requirements.

• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.

• Experience with product‑management tools (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps, Trello).

Desirable

• Industry‑specific knowledge (e.g., SaaS, fintech, e‑commerce, etc.).

• Experience working with UX/UI teams.

• Familiarity with data analytics and metrics‑driven decision‑making.

• Relevant certifications (e.g., PSPO, CSPO).
